There’s a certain magic to wedding photography—not just in the moments it captures, but in how it captures them. In an age where couples are curating intentional, artful wedding experiences, one question pops up more than ever: Should we choose film or digital photography? Or better yet, can we have both?

As a wedding photographer familiar with incorporating both mediums into a wedding day, I’m here to explain the key differences, help you understand what each format brings to your day, and share why I believe the best photography often lives in the sweet spot between the two.

What Is Film Wedding Photography?

Film photography uses analog cameras (often 35mm or medium format) and physical rolls of film to create images. After the event, I develop and scan the film to be viewed digitally or printed.

Film is known for:

  • A soft, timeless quality that evokes nostalgia
  • Rich, creamy tones and subtle grain
  • Dreamy highlights and skin tones
  • An intentional, slowed-down shooting approach (with fewer total images captured)

What Is Digital Wedding Photography?

Digital photography uses high-resolution DSLR or mirrorless cameras that store thousands of images on memory cards. These files can be instantly reviewed, backed up, and edited in post-processing.

Digital photography offers:

  • Crisp, true-to-life detail and sharpness
  • Greater flexibility in lighting and shooting conditions
  • A higher volume of images captured
  • Fast turnaround times and more editing control

Why Film Draws Some Couples In

Film is a love language of its own. For couples who are deeply connected to emotion, light, and detail, it offers:

  • A slower, more intentional storytelling process
  • That unexplainable nostalgic feeling—a softness that feels like memory
  • An editorial, fine-art aesthetic that feels elevated and timeless

Why Digital Is a Go-To for Many Weddings

Digital is fast, flexible, and efficient. For couples who want full coverage of the day—every candid laugh, wild dance move, and teary-eyed toast—it offers:

  • Quick adaptability in fast-moving or low-light moments
  • More images delivered, often sooner
  • The ability to capture fleeting expressions in an instant

Can You Have Film AND Digital Wedding Photography? Absolutely.

The best of both worlds is not only possible—it’s what I aim for.

While I love the craft and patience of film, most of my wedding work is digital. That said, my editing process is deeply inspired by film and cinematic photography: think true-to-tone colors, subtle grain, and a warm, nostalgic finish that feels honest and emotional. My goal is to give you timeless photographs, no matter the medium.

I often incorporate film photography into slower moments of the day—getting ready, golden hour portraits, or quiet in-between exchanges. Then I lean into digital to keep up with the energy of your ceremony, reception, and spontaneous moments you won’t want to miss.

My Take: Why I Use Both

For me, film is a grounding force. It slows me down and sharpens my focus on the artistry of a single frame. Digital, on the other hand, allows me to stay present and responsive throughout the ever-changing rhythm of a wedding day.

I use both mediums with intention, and my clients benefit from that balance: artful storytelling rooted in emotion elevated with modern precision.
