There’s a certain magic to wedding photography—not just in the moments it captures, but in how it captures them. In an age where couples are curating intentional, artful wedding experiences, one question pops up more than ever: Should we choose film or digital photography? Or better yet, can we have both?
As a wedding photographer familiar with incorporating both mediums into a wedding day, I’m here to explain the key differences, help you understand what each format brings to your day, and share why I believe the best photography often lives in the sweet spot between the two.

Film photography uses analog cameras (often 35mm or medium format) and physical rolls of film to create images. After the event, I develop and scan the film to be viewed digitally or printed.
Film is known for:

Digital photography uses high-resolution DSLR or mirrorless cameras that store thousands of images on memory cards. These files can be instantly reviewed, backed up, and edited in post-processing.
Digital photography offers:

| Feature | Film Photography | Digital Photography |
|---|---|---|
| Image Aesthetic | Soft, nostalgic, romantic | Crisp, vibrant, true-to-life |
| Editing Style | Minimal, scans color corrected | Highly customizable in post |
| Shooting Process | Slow, curated, intentional | Fast, dynamic, responsive |
| Image Quantity | Limited (per roll) | High volume |
| Lighting Flexibility | Performs best in natural light | Adaptable to any lighting |
| Delivery Timeline | Slower (includes film processing) | Faster (digital processing only) |
| Cost | More expensive (film + lab work) | Included in most packages |

Film is a love language of its own. For couples who are deeply connected to emotion, light, and detail, it offers:
Digital is fast, flexible, and efficient. For couples who want full coverage of the day—every candid laugh, wild dance move, and teary-eyed toast—it offers:

The best of both worlds is not only possible—it’s what I aim for.
While I love the craft and patience of film, most of my wedding work is digital. That said, my editing process is deeply inspired by film and cinematic photography: think true-to-tone colors, subtle grain, and a warm, nostalgic finish that feels honest and emotional. My goal is to give you timeless photographs, no matter the medium.
I often incorporate film photography into slower moments of the day—getting ready, golden hour portraits, or quiet in-between exchanges. Then I lean into digital to keep up with the energy of your ceremony, reception, and spontaneous moments you won’t want to miss.

For me, film is a grounding force. It slows me down and sharpens my focus on the artistry of a single frame. Digital, on the other hand, allows me to stay present and responsive throughout the ever-changing rhythm of a wedding day.
I use both mediums with intention, and my clients benefit from that balance: artful storytelling rooted in emotion elevated with modern precision.
Do you love the timeless charm of film or the flexibility of digital (or somewhere in between)? I’ll help you bring that vision to life. You don’t have to know all the answers—you just have to feel something when you look at the work.

Perched high above the Vail Valley, the Vail Mountain Wedding Deck offers sweeping alpine views and a quiet that’s hard to find elsewhere. At over 10,000 feet, you quite literally rise above it all. With the Gore Range stretching endlessly behind you and Colorado’s beloved 14er, Mount of the Holy Cross, anchoring the horizon, the […]

Tucked into the Elk Mountains of western Colorado, you’ll find Crested Butte. It’s about four hours from Denver, but once you’re there, the pace shifts. You get less noise, more space, and better views, perfect for those dream summer mountain engagement photos. In the summer, it’s known as the wildflower capital of Colorado, and yes, […]

Jackie and Mike’s day is proof that a non-venue wedding in Telluride can be just as intentional, meaningful, and beautifully planned as any traditional celebration. They found me through a past bride (the best kind of introduction, if you ask me), and by the time we connected, there was already trust. They loved my work, […]

Snowy engagement photos in Vail are never a bad idea. You get consistent powder, open mountain views, and clean backdrops that don’t compete. The landscape is simple, which means the focus stays on the couple, not the scenery trying to steal the show. Snow softens everything visually, from light to color to texture. It creates […]

Meredith and Broderick’s late-August Telluride wedding unfolded with the kind of mountain-town charm that always keeps you on your toes—sun one minute, clouds the next. I covered their entire weekend, starting with the welcome evening and carrying all the way through the wedding day, which gave me the chance to document not just the big […]

Vail has no shortage of stunning backdrops, but when it comes to Vail wedding venues, there’s something undeniably magical about tying the knot in the mountains. Maybe it’s the crisp alpine air, the way the Gore Range catches the evening light, or the simple luxury of being surrounded by scenery that feels straight out of […]
