The Best Scenic Colorado Engagement Photo Locations

tips for couples

Hey, hi — welcome! If you’re dreaming up your Colorado engagement session, you’re in the right place. Truly, the scenery here doesn’t mess around. You’ve got snow-capped mountains, meadows that feel like a scene from Sound of Music, reflective alpine lakes, golden aspens, wildflowers that go off in the summer, and yes, actual sand dunes. It’s a choose-your-own-adventure type of state, making it a much more fun and creative place to plan an engagement session. These locations work whether you want an adventurous hike to an overlook or to keep things low-key and stylish in town (with maybe a post-session drink). As a wedding photographer based in this stunning state, I’ve explored many of Colorado’s most scenic spots—and I’m sharing my top recommendations to help you find a place that feels like you. Let’s dive into some of the best Colorado engagement photo locations.

1. Piney River Ranch | Vail

Just outside Vail, Piney River Ranch is a go-to for couples who want the classic Colorado look—alpine lake, rugged peaks, and plenty of wide-open space. It’s peaceful, scenic, and feels remote while still accessible. The best time to shoot here is late June through early fall, when the road is open and the views are at their best. Think wildflowers, golden light, and mountain reflections. Couples love the moody sunsets, canoe photo ops, and relaxed, lodge-style charm.

Why I love it: The views are unmatched, and the light here is often soft and golden—perfect for romantic, movement-filled photos.

Accessibility: Open seasonally from mid/late June through early October. The road to the ranch is a rough dirt road—4WD is recommended. No permit is required for engagement sessions unless working with the ranch directly for special access.

2. Maroon Bells | Aspen

Arguably the most photographed spot in Colorado—and honestly, it lives up to the hype. Maroon Bells is known for its dramatic, snow-dusted peaks, glassy reflective lake, and rows of aspen trees that absolutely glow in the fall.

Best for: Summer and early fall engagements. You’ll need a reservation or shuttle pass, but the results are well worth it.

Accessibility: The park is open seasonally from mid-May to early October. Parking reservations or shuttle tickets are required. Photography permits are required for professional sessions.

3. Crested Butte Wildflower Fields | Crested Butte

This is your moment to live in a fairytale. Crested Butte is known as Colorado’s wildflower capital, and for good reason. The colors are unreal, and the whole scene has a dreamy, almost magical quality that simultaneously feels soft and bold. It’s perfect if you’re going for that effortless, romantic vibe with a hint of whimsy.

Bonus: The town itself is charming and makes for a cute pre- or post-session wander.

Accessibility: Best visited from late June through July for peak wildflowers. Many trails are accessible by car; others require moderate hiking. No permit is typically needed for engagement sessions.

4. Great Sand Dunes National Park | Alamosa

For something totally unexpected, Great Sand Dunes delivers big time. This spot has endless rolling dunes, surreal light, and minimalist vibes. It’s an otherworldly experience. This location is ideal for couples who want something bold, adventurous, and a little out of the box. Bonus points for going barefoot and bringing a flowy outfit that catches the wind—simple styling goes a long way in a wild setting.

What to know: The sand can be hot in the summer. Aim for sunrise or sunset for cooler temperatures and better light.

Accessibility: Open year-round. Summer months can be extremely hot on the dunes. A national park photography permit is required for professional sessions.

5. Telluride Town + Mountain Village | Telluride

Telluride makes you wonder if you accidentally wandered onto a movie set. Between the charming downtown streets, towering peaks, and cozy Mountain Village, it’s the perfect blend of alpine drama and editorial appeal. You have cobblestone walkways, historic buildings, and jaw-dropping views in every direction—plus, the free gondola connecting town and Mountain Village adds a fun, adventurous twist (and yes, it’s very photogenic).

While it’s gorgeous year-round, fall here is next-level. Golden aspens light up the mountainside and give everything a warm glow. If you dream of an elevated, stylish, and stunning location, this one’s a solid yes.

Insider tip: Plan a sunrise session for dreamy light and fewer crowds.

Accessibility: It is accessible year-round. The gondola operates seasonally, so check schedules. A permit is not required for engagement photos in public areas, but certain locations or private properties may require permission.

6. Rocky Mountain National Park | Estes Park

RMNP offers some of the state’s most iconic scenery, with alpine lakes, snow-dusted peaks, and the occasional elk wandering through to say hello. Favorite spots like Trail Ridge Road and Sprague Lake make it easy to find stunning backdrops without venturing too far. Whether you’re going for epic mountain views or something more serene and woodsy, there’s no shortage of options here.

Permits required: Get a photography permit and plan for entrance reservations.

Accessibility: The park is open year-round, but many high-elevation roads and areas close in winter. Timed entry permits are required during peak season (late May–October). A professional photography permit is also required.

7. Guanella Pass | Georgetown

If golden aspens and crisp fall air are your thing, Guanella Pass is hard to beat. It’s one of the best spots in Colorado for autumn color, with rolling mountain meadows and groves of golden trees. The drive offers stunning views, with plenty of easy pull-offs and trails to explore—no major hiking required unless you’re up for it. Whether you’re in the mood for wide-open views or tucked-away forest nooks, there’s a little something for everyone. Cozy sweaters are encouraged.

Why I love it: The diverse landscapes allow for various backdrops, all within a relatively short distance. It’s lovely when the aspen trees turn golden during the fall, creating a rich color palette.

Accessibility: Guanella Pass is typically open from late May to late November, depending on snowfall. The pass is accessible by car, with several pull-offs and parking areas near scenic spots. Photography doesn’t require special permits, but check current road conditions and any seasonal closures before planning your session.

8. Lost Gulch Overlook | Boulder

Perched above Boulder, Lost Gulch Overlook serves up one of the most dramatic cliffside views in the Front Range—no major hike required. It’s known (and loved) for its jaw-dropping sunsets and wide-open views that stretch for miles. The best part is it’s just a quick drive from town, but once you’re up there, it feels totally removed from the bustle. It is popular, though. Like, very popular. Aim for a weekday session or show up early to avoid the crowds (and snag the best light). The views are worth the extra planning.

Why it works: It’s one of the most photogenic spots on the Front Range, especially for golden hour sessions.

Accessibility: It is accessible year-round by vehicle. In the winter months, it can be snowy or icy. Professional photography requires a Boulder OSMP permit.

9. Breckenridge, CO

Breckenridge combines mountain charm with just the right touch of laid-back Colorado energy. Between the historic downtown, snowy pine forests, and panoramic mountain views, a ton of variety is packed into one spot.

You can keep it cozy with strolls through Main Street (yes, there’s good coffee) or head into the hills for quiet trails and alpine lakes. It works beautifully year-round — think snow-dusted winter sessions or lush green summer vibes with wildflowers.

This is a great pick for couples wanting that balance of mountain adventure and a little post-session après-something in town. You really can have both.

10. Loveland Pass | Continental Divide at 11,990 ft

Loveland Pass is for the couple who doesn’t mind a little wind in their hair and a lot of elevation. At nearly 12,000 feet, this spot offers wide-open views of the Continental Divide, epic ridgelines, and untamed alpine energy.

It’s a quick pull-off from the road, so it’s super accessible—no major hike required—but still gives those high-elevation, big-mountain views that scream Colorado. It’s great year-round, though summer and early fall are incredibly stunning.

“Photography takes an instant out of time, altering life by holding it still”

Words I Live by

I'm WHITNEY.

Your wedding day is a story—one filled with fleeting moments of beauty, deep emotion, and once-in-a-lifetime memories. As an artist, I am here to preserve those moments with intention, artistry, and care. I don’t just capture what your wedding looked like—I document how it felt.

Born and raised in the breathtaking landscapes of Vail, Colorado, I am deeply inspired by the way love and nature intertwine. There’s something poetic about the way light moves across mountain peaks, the way wind dances through a bride’s veil, and how the beauty of the outdoors mirrors the intimacy of a wedding day. My work is shaped by this connection—an effortless blend of refined editorial imagery and documentary storytelling, allowing each wedding to unfold naturally while being captured with timeless elegance.

Beyond photography, I am an adventurer at heart. Whether I’m exploring new landscapes, hiking through the Rockies, or traveling to breathtaking destinations, my love for movement and exploration brings an effortless, natural feel to my imagery. Every love story is unique, and I am deeply invested in capturing the emotions, scenery, and in-between moments that make your wedding day truly unforgettable. From the moment we connect, my goal is to provide an effortless, elevated experience that allows you to be fully present while I handle the art of storytelling. With a calm, intuitive approach, I blend artistic direction with documentary storytelling—guiding you when needed while allowing your most authentic moments to unfold naturally. My couples value timeless, emotive imagery, a refined yet relaxed presence, and the confidence of knowing their memories are being preserved with intention. When I’m not behind the camera, you can find me skiing down the slopes, hiking with my husband and our two border collies, or enjoying a slow morning with a perfectly crafted latte. I live for meaningful conversations, spontaneous adventures, and capturing beauty in the quiet, in-between moments of life—just as I do with my couples. I take on a limited number of weddings each year to provide an intimate, high-touch experience, ensuring each love story is captured with the highest level of artistry and care. If you feel drawn to timeless, emotional, and editorial-inspired imagery, I would love to hear your vision and create something extraordinary together.
