Gorrono Ranch Wedding Guide: A Real Wedding in Telluride

A Gorrono Ranch wedding gives you something pretty hard to manufacture: a setting that already has personality. Janelle and Dave wanted their August celebration to feel Western and elevated, pulling from Telluride’s summer landscape with soft yellow, white, and cream florals. One of my favorite things about photographing a wedding here is that Gorrono Ranch already brings so much character. The weathered wood, aspens, open landscape, and mountain views give you that unmistakable Colorado feeling without requiring you to lean heavily into a Western theme.

Janelle and Dave chose August partly for the weather and because the season fit their wildflower-inspired vision so well. Their ceremony took place outside on the wooden deck overlooking the mountains, with abundant arrangements of white, cream, buttery yellow, and green lining the aisle and framing the ceremony space. Guests had parasols for the afternoon sun, which were practical and also happened to look ridiculously chic in photographs. Win-win.

Their vows were incredibly sweet, and there was so much genuine emotion between these two. They also incorporated family traditions in subtle, meaningful ways. They toasted with champagne glasses from Janelle’s parents’ wedding, and instead of tossing her bouquet, Janelle gave the flowers to her mom.

Planning for Telluride Mountain Weather

Even with an August date, mountain weather can change quickly. The weather shifted during Janelle and Dave’s wedding, so we adjusted some of our photography plans and worked with what the day gave us rather than forcing the original timeline.

That’s one reason I think an experienced vendor team matters so much for a mountain wedding. A good plan is important, but so is having people who can change it without turning Plan B into a whole thing. We pivoted when we needed to and still ended up with beautiful light later in the day for their portraits.

An Elevated Western Wedding Inspired by Telluride

Janelle and Dave described their vision as “Western and elevated,” which turned out to be exactly how their wedding felt.

The ranch brought the rustic character while their design added softness and polish. Janelle’s lace gown stood out beautifully against the dark wood of the lodge; Dave and his groomsmen wore classic black tuxedos, and shades of soft yellow were carried throughout the flowers and wedding party. Cowboy hats appeared without the entire wedding suddenly becoming a Western costume party.

That’s one of Gorrono Ranch’s biggest strengths from a design perspective: you really don’t need to transform it. The architecture and landscape already give you plenty to work with, so you can focus your design budget on a few elements that make a major impact.

For Janelle and Dave, the florals absolutely did that. Their floral installation and ceremony arrangements were some of the most memorable details of the day. Rather than competing with the mountain scenery, the loose, wildflower-inspired arrangements felt like they belonged there while still giving the entire celebration a more refined look.

Turning a Telluride Wedding Into a Full Weekend

Their celebration actually began the evening before the wedding at Dave’s family vacation home in Mountain Village. Because the home was already meaningful to his family, the welcome party had a personal feel while also giving everyone who had traveled to Colorado time together before the wedding day.

For destination weddings especially, I love photographing more than just the wedding itself. By the next day, I already knew many of the important people, everyone was more comfortable having me around, and I had more context for the relationships I was documenting.

Mountain Village also makes a convenient home base for a Telluride wedding weekend. A free pedestrian gondola connects Mountain Village and the town of Telluride, making it relatively easy for guests to experience both areas during their stay.

From Mountain Views to a Shot Ski on the Dance Floor

The elevated design did not stop Janelle and Dave from having a seriously fun reception.

Janelle changed into a sparkly fringe mini dress and white cowboy boots before the dance floor really got going. They brought out a shot ski as a nod to their love of skiing and all the winter trips they’ve taken to Telluride, and there was an ice cream cookie dessert wagon—which I personally think deserves to become significantly more common at weddings.

Those were some of the details that made the celebration feel unmistakably theirs. They chose a spectacular venue and created a beautiful wedding, but they still made plenty of room for personality and fun.

Afterward, Janelle and Dave shared that one of the things they appreciated most about working together was feeling taken care of throughout the weekend. I gave direction when it was useful, adjusted our plans as the weather changed, and photographed everything across digital, film, and Polaroids. Sometimes taking care of a couple also looks like holding touch-up makeup, bringing ring boxes for detail photos, or noticing something worth documenting that no one thought to add to the shot list. Those little things are part of the job to me, too.
